Until The Fun Begins!!

“Back by popular demand," we [Big Cat (Jim) from Tennessee and Jhughes556 (Jim) from Texas] are pleased to announce that planning for Rockies Gold V, 2012, is underway.  Make your plans now to join your GL1800Riders.com friends in Montrose, CO, the week of September 4 through 9, 2012.

Once again WingNutZZ has agreed to update and sponsor the Rockies-Gold website for the exchange of information related to this years gathering.  And, as in earlier gatherings, GJwing (Denis) is doing the registration and attendees pages, which are linked on the Rockies-Gold site.  Many thanks Dave and Denis!!!!

Since PODO and his team of organizers did such a good job planning last years event, this years gathering will be very similar with a few changes and a few surprises.

You are encouraged to stay at our “home base” location, the Best Western Red Arrow in Montrose.  This is a 55-room facility with a great set-up for our group.  The rooms are big and clean, the bike wash area is convenient and easy to use, and the free breakfast has lots of choices, including a make-your-own waffle machine.

Please make your lodging reservations before registering!

The Best Western Red Arrow has graciously blocked off 50 rooms for us through August 4, 2012 at the group rate of $89.99 + tax for two queen beds.  King suites are $99.99.

We hope to see every room rented to our group!  The parking lot and central pool areas are perfect gathering places to check out the bikes and meet new friends.  And, there will be several informal activities at the Red Arrow you won’t want to miss!

Half the fun is walking the parking lot to check out the other bikes and meet new GL1800.com friends.  And, morning breakfast is the place to hook up with others for a day of riding on the most breathtaking roads in the US.

These rooms will go fast, so don’t be left out…make your reservations as soon as possible!  For motel and phone number information, click on the 2012 Lodging link above.  Be sure to tell them you are with the Rockies Gold group to get the group rate.

Of course, there are other nice places to stay in Montrose…check out the 2012 lodging link to see other options.

If you have any questions, contact Jim (Big Cat from TN) and Jim (Jhughes556 from TX) at:  jim@rockies-gold.net.

In response to questions on "what goes on"?  This gathering is hanging and riding....hanging and riding....hanging and riding.  All informal and everything organized by those who attend, done on-the-fly.

Loose group, loose rules, loose expectations!  Fun Time!!

Other Photos From the Rides Are Included on the "Montrose Rides" Pages

The only requirement is to ride safe and have fun!!!

For those spouses who wish to attend but who do not want to made a cross-country trip on the back of the bike to get to Montrose, there are  several options for flying-in -- check the flights to Montrose.  Montrose has a nice, small airport with several flights each day via United Express and other "express" airlines.  We received very good feedback from those that flew directly into Montrose for the 2007 and 2008 gatherings.  Denver and Colorado Springs are also options, but those are 4+ hours from Montrose, so that does complicate things somewhat.

Altitude -- Don't Let It Become An Issue (click here)

Most of Colorado is at an altitude above 5,000 feet and your travels to do Rockies-Gold may include riding some passes that may be as high as 12,000 feet, and if you include Pikes Peak or Mt. Evans you would be riding to an elevation of just over 14,000 feet.  Such elevations can have negative effects on many folks that are traveling here from lower elevations.  Click on the above link for additional information on altitude sickness, its symptoms, and some possible remedies.  Probably one of the most important things is to remember to drink water, drink water, and drink water.  It is very easy to get dehydrated at the higher elevations and in the dry Colorado climate, so force yourself to drink plenty of water.   If you experience symptoms, it is also advisable to avoid alcoholic beverages.
